Duties for secondary teaching (SNET)

SNETs are required to teach English as a second language to Chinese students and assist in teacher and curriculum development in Government and Government - supported secondary schools (for students aged between 12 and 17) and schools for students with special educational needs.

Objectives

  • To develop innovative models of good practice in creative/communicative approaches to the teaching and learning of English, including the production of curriculum materials;
  • To develop students' interest and confidence in learning English both within mainstream and extra-curricular activities; and
  • To promote the professional development of the local teachers.

Duties

The exact duties of SNETs should be determined by the School Principal/Supervisor according to the specific needs of the School. In general, the duties of SNETs should cover the following:

  1. To be responsible for classroom teaching and assessment;
  2. To teach in accordance with the curriculum of the School to which he is appointed under the guidance of the School Principal;
  3. To provide support to the English Panel Chairperson, including assisting in the curriculum development/adaptation and preparation of teaching materials;
  4. To assist in conducting extra-curricular activities related to the English language, e.g. speech, drama, debates, choral speaking and extensive reading;
  5. To assist in running oral activities for students after school;
  6. To assist in setting up an English corner in the School where students can come together to practise oral English and read English books under their guidance; an
  7. To act as an English language resource person for other teachers in school, including assisting in school-based teacher development.
