English teachers from Australia and New Zealand for Hong Kong primary and secondary schools
Job description
The Native-speaking English Teacher Scheme (NET scheme) was initiated
by the Education Bureau, Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to support and enrich language learning and teaching in all public-sector primary and secondary schools by:
- providing an authentic environment for students to learn English
- developing student's interest in learning English
- establishing a foundation for life-long learning
- assisting local teachers develop innovative learning and teaching programs,
resources and activities to meet the need of students
- promoting good teaching and learning language practices through region-based professional development programs, seminars, workshops and networking activities.
Teaching responsibilities
Duties for primary teaching
(PNET)

teaching (SNET)
Teachers will be required to undertake the following duties:
- teach English as a second language
- provide support to school English faculties
- develop school based English materials and programs
including professional development (school based &
regional)
- act as an English policy advisor to the Principal
and other teachers in the schools
- organise and participate in extra-curricula activities
related to English learning and teaching and other
areas (for example: IT, Art and Sport)

Qualifications required
for primary teachers
Primary applicants require qualifications including either a Teaching Certificate, a degree, degree plus Dip. Ed. or B. Ed. All applicants for primary positions also require a TESOL qualification at least to certificate level. Acceptable TESOL courses as those with at least 100 hours contact hours and a practicum component. For example CELTA or Certificate IV in TESOL courses fulfil the requirements of the Hong Kong Education Bureau. It is possible to apply for a PNET position if you have enrolled in an appropriate TESOL certificate course and can show evidence of this enrolment and the course can be undertaken in 2010. Qualifications
required for secondary teachers
Secondary applicants with teaching qualifications require an English major/teaching method (in a Degree or Dip Ed). Applicants with a degree with an English major but no teaching qualifications require a TEFL/TESL at least to diploma level . Applicants with a degree without an English major require a masters degree in TEFL/TESL. All secondary applicants must have the equivalent of at least one years teaching experience at secondary level or above. Click on the link above for more details.
Successful primary teaching applicants without
TESOL qualifications to obtain a TESOL qualification
at least to certificate level before taking up the
position in Hong Kong or within the first twelve
months of taking up the position at their own expense
and in their own time.

The Hong Kong Education Bureau is seeking teachers for primary and secondary schools to begin their appointments between mid August 2010 and 31 December. Applications for the next round of interviews should be made by 12 July 2010. Contracts are for 2 years. Renewal of the contract may be approved by schools, subject to satisfactory performance and endorsement by the Education Bureau, Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. A generous salary package is offered including airfares and an accommodation allowance.
